Geography Borth trip

On Monday 12th July the Geography department took 41 pupils to Borth on the Welsh coast. Pupils have been studying coastal processes, landforms and management as part of their GCSE. We departed by coach at 11.30 and arrived in Borth at 2.00pm. Pupils were given time to have their lunch and explore the extensive sandy beach before commencing their fieldwork tasks.

Pupils were split into two groups; Mr Nicholas took his group to study longhshore drift and draw field sketches of the coastal defences in place along the seafront. Mr Ives’ group conducted a beach survey which involved a lot of fieldwork kit including clinometers, ranging poles, tape measures and calipers.

Pupils gathered data on the shape of the beach and the sediment size. The groups then swapped tasks. Data was recorded for analysis back in the classroom.

As a reward, pupils were taken to the visitors centre on Borth spit where they were given free time to buy an icecream and explore the massive dune system. The sunny weather was a very fortunate and added to a great day out.

Pupils were back at school by 6.30 having had a great day out at the seaside!
