The English department is a team of fully dedicated professionals committed to supporting, guiding and enriching the learning experience for all students.
At KS3, students follow a lively, engaging and challenging course where Assessment for Learning and Assessing Pupil Progress are given a significant emphasis. Students are formally assessed on a half-termly basis on one of the three strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
Students in Years 10 and 11 currently follow the AQA examination syllabus and sit GCSE English and English Literature at the end of year 11 as appropriate to their ability. In Year 10, an express group of gifted and talented students in English and Maths has been formed where students will be entered early for English Literature at the end of the academic year.
We offer a wide range of extra curricular activities including a residential creative writing trip at Ty Newydd, following which the students complete, edit and produce an anthology of their written work. Additionally, we offer theatre visits , a media work shop, and a “celebration of success” evening for students involved in the “fresh start” literacy programme.
The English department is assisted by a group of “lead learners” who consist of six KS3 students who carry out action research into an area of learning and then provide feedback to the Head of Department who works with the group to improve the learning experience for all students. Ideas are cascaded to all members of the department to implement as appropriate, in this way, good practice is shared throughout our learning community.
